The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of five individuals in a boat mishap near Bennett Island in Warri South Local Government Area. One passenger remains unaccounted for as search efforts continue.

Edafe provided a breakdown of the incident, stating, “Five were found dead, six persons injured and receiving treatment, 19 passengers rescued, and one still missing.”

In a separate development, Edafe disclosed that robbery suspects were neutralized during a shootout with police operatives in a forest near Warri. Arms were also recovered during the operation.

Detailing the operation, Edafe said, “The surveillance team from Ekpan Division, while patrolling the Effurun Roundabout axis, arrested one suspect, Eto, aged 31, who was found in possession of a black bag containing 57 live cartridges. Following Eto’s confession, the team raided a hideout at Coconut Village along Warri/Sapele Road and apprehended another suspect, Sunny, aged 25, who was waiting to receive the cartridges.”

The suspects led police operatives to their main hideout in a forest near the 3 Battalion Barracks Army Estate, Effurun, identified as their base of operations known as “Korodo.”

Both incidents highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining safety in the region as authorities continue efforts to address insecurity and prevent further tragedies.
