The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden and tragic death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian professional footballer, in Uganda.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the acting spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government extended heartfelt condolences to Lawal’s family, friends, teammates, and the Nigerian football community.
Circumstances Surrounding Lawal’s Death
Lawal, a former Nigerian Under-20 international, was playing for Vipers Football Club in Uganda while also pursuing a final-year Business Administration degree at Cavendish University, Uganda.
Reports indicate that he fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on Monday morning, leading to his untimely death.
In response to the tragedy, the Federal Government has directed the Nigerian High Commission in Kampala to work closely with Ugandan authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Government Orders Full Investigation and Autopsy
The Nigerian government has ordered a thorough investigation, including an autopsy, to determine the exact cause of death.
“We are committed to ensuring that a thorough and transparent investigation is conducted, including an autopsy to verify the cause of death,” the Ministry stated.
Additionally, the Ministry has instructed the High Commission in Kampala to provide all necessary consular assistance to Lawal’s family to ensure their well-being during this difficult period.
Federal Government Calls for Patience, Urges Against Speculation
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reassured Nigerians that the government is closely monitoring the case and emphasized the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Uganda. It expressed confidence that Ugandan authorities would handle the matter with professionalism and sensitivity.
The government also urged the public to remain calm and patient, discouraging speculation that could obstruct the ongoing investigation.
“We call for calm and patience as the investigation unfolds and urge the public to refrain from speculation that could hinder the process,” the statement read.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and rights of Nigerians abroad, pledging to continue closely monitoring the situation until justice is served.
