The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has intensified its efforts to tackle rising criminal activities such as kidnapping by banning the use of vehicles with tinted windows and covered number plates. This clampdown, announced in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, is aimed at curbing criminal acts like “one chance” operations in Abuja.
Vehicle owners in the FCT have been directed to remove tinted windows or risk having their vehicles impounded. Adeh stated, “For now, the use of tinted glasses on vehicles is prohibited. If your vehicle has tinted glasses, kindly remove them to avoid having your vehicle impounded by the police.”
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, reinforced this directive during a parade of suspects, emphasizing the role of tinted windows and covered number plates in facilitating criminal activities. Disu noted that several rescued kidnapping victims cited tinted windows as a barrier to getting help, as it obscured their distress from potential witnesses.
He explained, “We are clamping down on all commercial vehicles and individuals with tinted vehicles. Tinted glass contributes to lawlessness, making it difficult for people to identify victims of kidnappings or other crimes. Additionally, vehicles with covered or missing number plates are being used to carry out criminal activities.”
The Commissioner warned residents that enforcement of the ban on tinted windows, covered number plates, and unregistered vehicles would be strictly implemented. “Nobody has the right to tint their vehicles or cover their number plates. All laws related to these violations will be enforced because they are often used to shield criminal activities,” he added.
The announcement follows reports that 296 vehicles have already been impounded in the FCT for violating these directives. This measure is part of broader efforts to enhance public safety and reduce the operational advantage criminals gain through such practices. Vehicle owners are urged to comply promptly to avoid penalties and ensure a safer environment for all residents.
