The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that it needs a sum of N580 billion to rehabilitate runways across the country’s airports. This was revealed by FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, on Wednesday during a visit by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ibrahim Kana.

Aging Infrastructure in Need of Urgent Attention

Kuku lamented the deteriorating state of airport infrastructure, particularly the runways, many of which were built in the late 1970s and have outlived their 20–25-year lifespan. She noted that aging facilities such as terminals and runways have negatively impacted operational efficiency and safety, necessitating significant investments for modernization.

“N580 billion is required to fix runways across all airports. Their lifespan is between 20 to 25 years, but most of the airports were built in 1978,” Kuku said.

She further highlighted other challenges, including obsolete equipment like fire tenders, generators, air conditioning systems, and conveyor lines with worn-out components. The high maintenance costs of these facilities add to the financial burden of FAAN.

Additionally, Kuku pointed to ongoing security risks at airports, exacerbated by increased air travel and potential threats, as well as land encroachment due to the absence of perimeter fencing at several airports.

Plans for Modernization and Strategic Goals

To address these challenges, FAAN is committed to modernizing airport infrastructure by renovating terminals, expanding runways, and upgrading navigational aids. Kuku emphasized the importance of adopting a deliberate and systematic approach to avoid haphazard projects and abandoned initiatives.

For 2025, FAAN’s strategic focus will include:

  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs): Expanding investment opportunities and developing underutilized assets.
  • Infrastructure Modernization: Renovating critical facilities at major international airports and enhancing regional airport capacity to meet growing passenger and cargo demands.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Integrating energy efficiency, waste management, and carbon emission reduction practices into airport operations.
  • Staff Training and Welfare: Intensifying training on aviation security and safety, upgrading e-procurement systems, and improving working conditions and employee benefits.

Kuku also revealed plans to construct a centralized and modern FAAN head office to enhance operational efficiency.

Ministry of Aviation’s Support

Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana praised FAAN’s leadership for its role in the ongoing transformation of Nigeria’s aviation sector. He expressed confidence in the structural framework established under Kuku’s management and pledged the ministry’s continued support.

“The aviation sector demands constant innovation and expertise, and that is why I am urging everyone to contribute to improving the system. Together, we can elevate Nigeria’s aviation industry to global standards,” Kana said.

Challenges and Opportunities

While FAAN faces significant financial and operational challenges, its commitment to modernization and collaboration with industry stakeholders offers hope for sustainable growth. The integration of innovative strategies, public-private partnerships, and environmental practices is expected to enhance Nigeria’s aviation sector and position it for global competitiveness.

The proposed rehabilitation of runways and modernization of infrastructure will not only improve safety and efficiency but also attract investment and increase passenger satisfaction, ensuring the sector’s long-term viability.
