Exploring Culture, Inspiration, and Beauty: A Traveler’s Insights on Memorable Destinations, Experiences, and Aspirations

MAI-ATAFO

When I travel, I’m drawn to the fashion and the unique ways people express their style. I seek to understand what drives their choices, often finding inspiration for my own ideas. I’m also captivated by anything that aligns with my interests, like theatre and music, and I make it a point to attend related events. Observing a new place on foot is one of my favorite activities—sometimes walking for four to five hours in a single stretch, particularly when I’m outside Nigeria. Interior design fascinates me, so I often wander through decor stores, gathering fresh ideas.

While I enjoy discovering new places, I find the travel process itself exhausting. Packing, buying tickets, navigating airports, and immigration are all things I could do without, though I travel frequently—almost once a month, amounting to around 12 times a year.

Italy and South Africa hold some of my most memorable experiences. South Africa’s beauty, from its tranquil landscapes to its pristine beaches, truly left an impression. Meanwhile, Italian culture captured my attention with its passionate dedication to food, drink, fashion, and faith. Their attention to detail, especially in interior design, was astounding. While I’m not one to experiment with unfamiliar foods, I still enjoyed every culinary experience without feeling out of my element.

Traveling hasn’t subjected me to stereotypes, thankfully, and I did make friends along the way, although only a few connections have endured since returning home. During my time in South Africa, I visited historical and iconic sites like Mandela’s prison, Lion’s Head, Table Mountain, and even participated in a bridge bungee jump. I also attended one of the largest polo tournaments in the country.

My travel essentials always include headphones, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, my credit and debit cards, and a reliable internet connection. For anyone planning to travel, I suggest staying curious and observant. By absorbing what’s around you, you may return with fresh perspectives or business ideas. Social media documentation has its place, but I believe understanding the “why” behind local customs can be profoundly enriching.

If I were offered another citizenship, I’d likely decline since my dual citizenship in Nigeria and the UK grants me the access I need. Nigeria is home, and I have no desire to permanently relocate.

In Italy and South Africa, I noticed several aspects I wish Nigeria could adopt—like reliable security that enables freedom of movement and a general sense of orderliness and helpfulness among people. Nigeria has plenty of generous and supportive individuals, yet our infrastructure, including roads, electricity, and water access, still has room for improvement.

When I’m abroad, I miss the rich flavors of Nigerian food. My travel aspirations continue, with Singapore, Sweden, Indonesia, and Australia next on my list of destinations.
