The Enugu State Government has expressed strong condemnation over the bullying and physical assault of a student at Federal Government College in the state, describing the incident as “deeply troubling and emotionally distressing.” In response, the government has called for an urgent investigation and has ordered the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the violent act.
In a public service announcement issued by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, on Tuesday, the state reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance against bullying, abuse, and all forms of dehumanizing treatment within educational institutions. The statement underscored the state’s commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all students and warned of serious consequences for such behaviors.
Although the incident occurred at a federal institution, the Enugu State Government has assured that it is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Education to ensure that appropriate disciplinary actions are taken against the students responsible and any school staff found negligent in their duties.
The government emphasized its dedication to student safety, highlighting the investments made under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration to create a secure and supportive learning environment. “The Enugu State Government has zero tolerance for bullying and abuse in our schools. The safety and welfare of our students are paramount, and those engaging in such criminal behaviors must be prepared to face the consequences,” the statement read.
The government also reminded educational institutions of their duty to prioritize student safety, cautioning that harassment, intimidation, or violence would attract strict repercussions. The statement follows the circulation of a video on Monday showing a group of students physically assaulting a fellow student in a school hostel, sparking widespread public outrage and prompting immediate responses from authorities.
