A tragic incident occurred on New Year’s Day in Lagos State, as an electrician known simply as Sheni was electrocuted while repairing wiring connections at UNILAG Estate in the Magodo area.
Details of the Incident
The incident took place around 5 pm, when some residents of the estate requested Sheni’s services after experiencing a power outage. Sheni was called to fix the wiring connections, and as he mounted the pole to begin his work, electricity was unexpectedly restored to the high-tension wire. This sudden return of power led to the fatal electrocution.
One of the residents, speaking anonymously, described the scene: “He was called to fix some wiring connections and immediately got to work when he arrived. It was while he was fixing it that the light was restored to the high-tension wire. That was how he got electrocuted. We didn’t know until we discovered he was no longer moving. The next thing we saw was how he gradually bent backwards and started to dangle while up there. We also called his name but he did not respond.”
Efforts to Save the Victim
Another resident, identified as Dapo, recounted that the incident was immediately reported to the police station, and emergency responders were quickly alerted. The scene was attended by an anti-crime patrol team, as well as personnel from the fire service and Lagos State Ambulance Services.
Despite these efforts, Sheni’s body was eventually lowered from the pole and confirmed dead at the scene.
Investigation and Next Steps
A police source confirmed that the body was taken to the morgue while authorities worked to identify Sheni’s relatives. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the electrocution.
As of the time of this report, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had not responded to calls or text messages seeking further comment on the incident.
