The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday refuted allegations of naira abuse against Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje, following a viral video showing naira notes being sprayed at a wedding in Kano on October 24, 2024. The video had sparked speculation that the event was Goje’s daughter’s wedding, prompting calls for action against those involved.

However, in a statement from Dele Oyewale, the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, the Commission clarified that the naira abuse actually occurred during the wedding reception of Amina Babagana Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, who owns Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise.

“The EFCC promptly investigated the video,” Oyewale said. “While naira abuse did occur, it was at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah and not Senator Goje’s daughter’s wedding.” He further noted that Haruna confirmed the video’s authenticity, acknowledging that it was recorded at her daughter’s wedding.

The EFCC has summoned the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, and others involved in the currency abuse for questioning. According to Oyewale, “Those who allegedly sprayed naira notes and dollar bills were from the groom’s family, hailing from Niger Republic. The Commission has invited Mohammad and others involved to its national headquarters in Abuja.”

Emphasizing its commitment to curbing currency abuse, the EFCC assured the public that while it welcomes awareness raised by the incident, it will only pursue cases where there is clear evidence of naira abuse.
