Edo State Raises Fresh Alarm on Lassa Fever

The Edo State Government issued a new alert to residents in Benin City regarding the recent outbreak of Lassa fever in other parts of the country, reportedly worsened by bush burning and activities that cause rats to move into homes from the wild.

In a statement by Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, the government urged residents to take extra precautions against Lassa fever, which tends to spread during the dry season. The practice of bush burning often forces rats, known to carry the disease, into human dwellings.

Osagie emphasized that Governor Godwin Obaseki has been working to prevent the spread of Lassa fever in the state, but warned that failure to heed the government’s advice could increase the risk of infection. He highlighted the connection between bush burning during the dry season and the resurgence of the disease.

Residents were advised to safeguard their food and water by storing them in sealed containers, avoid burning bushes that could drive rats into homes, and maintain a clean environment.

He also encouraged reporting suspected cases to the state Ministry of Health or nearby health facilities and urged frequent handwashing and avoiding contact with infected individuals. Additionally, people with fever symptoms were urged to seek immediate medical attention. He stressed the importance of eliminating rats from homes and thoroughly cooking food.
