The Edo State Police Command has arrested four officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in connection with the death of a Bolt driver, Henry Osemwenkhia, in Benin City. The incident has ignited widespread protests among e-hailing drivers in the region, demanding justice for their deceased colleague.

The Incident

On February 4, 2025, Henry Osemwenkhia, a Bolt driver and father of two, reportedly transported a passenger to De Kaso Hotel along Limit Road in Benin City. Upon arrival, an altercation ensued between Osemwenkhia and some individuals, including suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys.” The confrontation escalated when these individuals accused Osemwenkhia of nearly hitting them with his vehicle. In response, they allegedly summoned NSCDC officers stationed at the hotel for security purposes. Instead of mediating, the NSCDC officers purportedly joined in assaulting the driver, inflicting severe injuries and puncturing his vehicle’s tires.

Aftermath and Medical Response

Following the assault, Osemwenkhia managed to report the incident at the New Etete Police Station. He was promptly issued a medical form and advised to seek treatment. Tragically, while awaiting the results of a medical scan, he was found dead in his home on February 5, 2025. His body has since been deposited at a local hospital for further examination.

Official Responses

DSP Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the arrest of the four NSCDC officers implicated in the incident. He stated, “The Commissioner of Police has directed an immediate investigation into the matter to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the driver.”

In contrast, Efosa Ogbebor, the Public Relations Officer for the NSCDC in Edo State, refuted the allegations against their personnel. He claimed that their officers were present at the hotel solely to provide security and had intervened only to separate a fight, denying any involvement in the assault. Ogbebor also disputed reports of their officers’ arrest, asserting that they had voluntarily reported to the police for questioning.

Protests by E-Hailing Drivers

In response to Osemwenkhia’s death, Bolt drivers under the aegis of E-hailing Drivers organized a peaceful protest in Benin City. Converging at the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Edo State Council premises, the protesters displayed placards with messages such as “Enough of the brutality by security agencies,” “Bolt drivers are not slaves,” and “Justice for Henry.” Festus Nwanbuzo, speaking on behalf of the group, described the deceased as a peaceful individual and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. He emphasized the need for justice, stating, “We want justice. Henry was a law-abiding driver who never looked for trouble. We won’t stop until those responsible are held accountable.”

Community Reactions

The incident has elicited strong reactions from various quarters. Many have expressed concern over the alleged misuse of power by security personnel and the safety of e-hailing drivers in the region. The Edo State Police Command has assured the public of a comprehensive investigation, pledging that justice will be served.

Conclusion

The death of Henry Osemwenkhia underscores the pressing need for accountability among security agencies and the protection of citizens’ rights. As investigations continue, the public awaits the outcome, hoping for justice and the implementation of measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
