On Wednesday night, Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, suspended the free bus service initiative announced earlier in the day. The program, which was intended to provide free transportation across the state, was put on hold due to operational challenges.
The initiative, initially outlined in a press statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, had promised free intra-city transportation within Benin metropolis and inter-city routes across the state’s three senatorial districts. The announcement was presented as part of Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of Edo residents.
However, by late Wednesday evening, the CPS released another statement urging the public to disregard the earlier announcement. He explained that the governor was briefed on operational issues within the Edo City Transport Service, the agency responsible for managing the scheme.
“The earlier statement announcing the approval of free bus services by the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, should be disregarded,” Itua stated. He added, “For now, the free bus services have been placed on hold. A new decision by the governor will be communicated to the general public.”
The suspension has raised concerns about the logistical and operational readiness of the program, leaving Edo residents uncertain about the future of transportation policies in the state.
Earlier in the day, Bernard Joman, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Edo State chapter, had commended the initiative, describing it as a much-needed relief for workers and students amidst the current harsh economic conditions.
“It is a welcome development for the Edo Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the people of the state. It will help to cushion the harsh economic conditions on the people and workers. The higher institution students have resumed, and the free transportation will surely help them,” Joman told FRONTPAGE.
He also urged Governor Okpebholo to ensure the scheme’s sustainability, noting its potential to provide long-term benefits to residents.
The reversal highlights the complexities of implementing welfare initiatives and underscores the need for comprehensive planning to address potential challenges effectively. Residents now await further communication from the governor regarding the program’s future.
