The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 32-year-old blogger, identified as Augustus, for allegedly cloning the agency’s official website and publishing a fraudulent recruitment notice aimed at deceiving the public. The suspect was apprehended on Thursday at his residence on Akpan Eno Lane in Abak, Akwa Ibom State.
Details of the Arrest
DSS operatives tracked Augustus, a content creator and graduate of the University of Uyo, to his residence. According to sources within the DSS, Augustus cloned the agency’s website to create a fake online recruitment notice, seemingly intended to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
“Augustus, a native of Abak Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, was tracked and arrested by our operatives on Thursday at his residence. He claimed to be a graduate of the University of Uyo, a blogger, and a content creator,” a DSS source stated.
The source further revealed that Augustus had used the cloned website to publish false recruitment information, preying on members of the public who might believe the notice was legitimate.
Warning to the Public
Following the discovery of the fake recruitment notice, the DSS issued a public warning, urging Nigerians not to fall victim to fraudulent activities and to verify recruitment announcements only through official channels.
“The fake recruitment notice was flagged as false, and Nigerians are advised to avoid falling prey to such scams,” the DSS cautioned.
Legal Proceedings
Augustus is currently in DSS custody and is expected to be arraigned in court soon to face charges related to cybercrime and fraud.
A Growing Concern
