The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away. Her death was announced in a statement issued by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, on Wednesday evening.
“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State,” the statement read.
A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga was a dedicated public servant, visionary leader, and passionate advocate for her constituents. She was first elected to the House in 2019 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). During her first tenure, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly. In this role, she championed policies aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare.
Following her re-election in 2023, she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly. In this capacity, she demonstrated exceptional leadership and a steadfast commitment to maintaining legislative discipline during parliamentary proceedings.

Affectionately known as “Ijaya,” Onanuga was admired for her intellect, humility, and drive for excellence. Her passion for creating a better society and dedication to public service left a significant impact on Nigeria’s political landscape.
