The Delta State Police Command has arrested Princess Okolie and her accomplice, Prince Atigbi, for staging a fake kidnapping to extort N2 million from Okolie’s parents. The arrest was carried out by the Special Anti-kidnapping and Cyber-crime Squad in a community within the state.
The Fake Kidnapping Scheme
The incident began on December 30, 2024, when Okolie reportedly left her family home and did not return. Her mother, Mrs. Joy Oliko, filed a missing person report with the police on January 1, 2025. Shortly after, the family received a call claiming that Okolie had been kidnapped, with the alleged kidnappers demanding a ransom of N2 million for her release.
Acting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, directed the Special Anti-kidnapping and Cyber-crime Squad to ensure the safe rescue of Okolie and the apprehension of the suspects.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, explained in a statement on Wednesday that CSP Labe Joseph, the Commander of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-crime Squad, led an intelligence-driven investigation into the case.
The operation led to the arrest of Atigbi, who had already collected the ransom. During interrogation, Atigbi confessed that he was not an actual kidnapper but had acted according to a plan orchestrated by his girlfriend, Princess Okolie.
Following this confession, Okolie was apprehended and admitted to faking her own kidnapping to extort money from her parents. Both suspects are currently in custody, and the ransom money has been recovered by the police.
Parental Guidance and Responsibility
Commenting on the case, the Commissioner of Police urged parents and guardians to prioritize the moral upbringing of their children.
“This incident underscores the importance of instilling values in children and guiding them in the ways of God. Proper upbringing can help prevent them from becoming problems to their parents and society,” he stated.
Broader Implications
The case has sparked discussions about the growing trend of self-kidnapping and its implications for families and law enforcement. It highlights the importance of robust intelligence-gathering and swift police action in addressing such cases.
As the investigation continues, the Delta State Police Command remains committed to ensuring justice and discouraging such criminal behaviors in the future.
