Delta Air Lines has announced the inclusion of Nigerian delicacies in the food options available to passengers on its Lagos-Atlanta flights. The initiative, part of the airline’s efforts to enhance the travel experience, will include dishes like Ewa Agoyin, alongside other local favorites, for passengers departing from Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
A Taste of Nigeria in the Skies
The airline revealed its new culinary offerings in a statement released on Thursday. It promised a luxurious dining experience for passengers flying in its Delta One premium cabin, blending Nigerian-inspired dishes with international cuisine.
“This holiday season, passengers can indulge in a delectable range of continental and Nigerian-inspired culinary delights designed to satisfy a variety of tastes while flying,” the statement read.
Premium Dining Options
Delta One passengers will be treated to a carefully curated menu featuring both Nigerian and international flavors. The experience begins with a selection of starters, including:
- Sliced beef fillet with pineapple salsa and sweet chili sauce.
- Corn soup with toasted corn salsa.
- Mixed greens salad with spicy lemon dressing, accompanied by a sunflower roll and whole butter.
For the main course, travelers can choose from:
- Nigerian-inspired dishes: Roasted cod with basmati rice, agoyin-style beans, and sweet plantains, or grilled chicken thigh with jollof rice and plantains.
- Plant-based option: A hearty bean stew with rice, spinach, tomatoes, and fried onions.
Desserts include:
- Pineapple upside-down tart with whipped cream.
- Seasonal fruit assortment.
- Classic ice cream sundae.
- A refined fruit and cheese plate.
As the flight nears Atlanta, Delta One passengers will enjoy a final meal featuring:
- Spicy chicken pie.
- Vegetable salad with zesty lemon dressing.
- Mini desserts.
- A vegetarian option of jollof risotto with roasted vegetables and spicy tomato sauce, paired with fresh fruit.
Twice-Served Onboard Meals
The new menu aligns with Delta’s decision to serve meals twice onboard, providing a comprehensive culinary experience for passengers. This follows a directive by Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, in October 2024, requiring foreign airlines to patronize local caterers for onboard meals. The directive, effective January 1, 2025, aims to promote Nigerian cuisine on international flights.
Enhancing Travel Experiences
By incorporating Nigerian dishes, Delta Air Lines not only caters to the preferences of its Nigerian customers but also introduces international travelers to the rich flavors of Nigerian cuisine. The initiative reflects the airline’s commitment to cultural inclusivity and enhancing passenger satisfaction.
With these updates, Delta Air Lines continues to set a benchmark for a blend of luxury, cultural appreciation, and exceptional service in air travel.
