EFCC Seeks Manager’s Arrest
Justice Alexander Owoeye of the Federal High Court in Lagos has issued a warrant for the arrest of Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, manager to renowned gospel singer Mercy Chinwo. The order, granted on Thursday, followed an ex parte motion filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
During the hearing, EFCC counsel Mrs. Bilikisu Buhari moved the application under relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015. She argued that the warrant was necessary to compel Onyedikachukwu’s appearance in court to face allegations of financial misconduct.
Allegations Against the Manager
The EFCC affidavit, deposed to by investigator Mr. Michael Idoko, revealed that the commission received a formal petition from Mercy Chinwo accusing her manager of financial irregularities.
According to the affidavit, Chinwo alleged that Onyedikachukwu was receiving royalties from her digital platforms and events but failed to disclose these earnings or remit her share. The manager is accused of diverting approximately $345,000.
Efforts to Locate Onyedikachukwu
The EFCC stated that attempts to apprehend Onyedikachukwu had been unsuccessful, prompting the request for a warrant. Mrs. Buhari further informed the court that, should the commission be unable to arrest the manager, a public summons would be issued to declare him wanted.
Court’s Ruling
Justice Owoeye, after considering the submissions, granted the EFCC’s request and issued the arrest warrant. The court has scheduled the arraignment of Onyedikachukwu for January 24, 2025.
Potential Public Declaration
The EFCC’s counsel hinted that if the arrest warrant proves ineffective, a public summons might be issued to ensure the manager’s compliance. This measure would further escalate efforts to bring him to court to face the allegations.
Legal Implications and Next Steps
The case underscores the importance of transparency in professional relationships, particularly in financial matters. Mercy Chinwo, a celebrated gospel artist, alleges significant losses due to the manager’s actions. The outcome of the January 24 arraignment will likely shed more light on the allegations and determine the next steps in the legal process.
As the investigation continues, this case serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and integrity in professional dealings, particularly in the entertainment industry.
