A total of 120 patients are set to benefit from a free cataract surgery program funded by the Chinese Consulate General in partnership with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Benin City, Edo State. In addition to surgery, the program offers free screenings, eye treatments, and a financial support package totaling N2 million for 20 patients.
UBTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, lauded the initiative, explaining that it targets 100 adults and 20 children in need of cataract surgery. He emphasized the relief the project would bring, especially given current economic challenges. “This is a laudable initiative, particularly during challenging economic times, and it will bring relief to many people in our hospital,” said Prof. Obaseki. He expressed hope for continued partnership with the Consulate General on similar future health initiatives.
Acting Consul General Jin Mingyu reiterated the commitment of the Chinese government to support Nigeria’s health needs. He encouraged people to take advantage of the program, noting that Chinese enterprises in Nigeria continue to thrive due to mutual support from the Nigerian government and people.
Dr. Valentina Okeigbemen, Head of the Ophthalmology Department at UBTH, highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Chinese Consulate, Yongxing Steel Company Limited, and the Edo State Ministry of Health, aiming for at least 120 surgeries. She noted that all surgery-related expenses are fully sponsored for both adults and children, including medications and hospital admissions.
She further noted, “This initiative is unique as it includes a dedicated focus on children, with full sponsorship covering fees, medications, and admission costs. It’s a tremendous step forward in reducing blindness, especially for underprivileged communities.”
The program commenced screening on November 6 and has continued with strong community engagement, aiming to make cataract treatment accessible to more residents across Edo State.
