Building Collapse in Rivers State Claims Life of Construction Worker, Developer Declared Wanted

Building collapse in Rivers State

A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Monday in the Egbelu Mgbaraja area of Ogbogoro Community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, resulting in the tragic death of one person and severe injuries to another. The incident occurred around 2 p.m., marking the second building collapse in the area within a week.

Eyewitness Jonathan Obey reported that the collapse occurred while construction workers were on the second floor. The deceased, identified as Udeme from Akwa Ibom State, lost his life, while another worker narrowly escaped with serious injuries. Obey attributed the collapse to the use of substandard materials, stating that the building lacked adequate foundation support. “The foundation and supports were insufficient for a two-storey structure, with poor-quality rods and cement used. The decking lacked a center pillar and beam, ultimately causing the collapse,” he explained.

Rivers State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Evans Bipi, visited the site shortly after the incident. He ordered the construction site sealed and declared the developer wanted, condemning the use of substandard materials and the lack of government approval for the construction. “We’ve made it clear that if you build without approval, you will face consequences. This developer must answer for using substandard materials that led to this tragic loss of life,” Bipi stated, emphasizing the government’s zero tolerance for negligence in construction practices.

In a statement by his media aide, Emeka Idika Kalu, Bipi extended condolences to the victim’s family and noted that the remains would be placed in a publicly accessible mortuary for family members. He urged others to follow proper procedures and obtain government approval before undertaking construction projects to avoid such tragedies.

Rivers State Commissioner for Special Duties, Samuel Anya, also condemned the developer’s actions, criticizing the prioritization of profit over safety. “This is heartbreaking. Not only was the building of poor quality, but it also lacked proper approval. Someone has now paid the price with his life,” Anya said, stressing that both the building owner and engineer would be held accountable as the government seeks to protect public safety.

This incident serves as a stern reminder of the importance of adherence to safety standards and government regulations in construction to prevent future tragedies.
