Buffon Returns to Juventus on One-Year Deal

Juventus legend Gianluigi Buffon has officially rejoined the club, signing a one-year contract that will keep him at the Turin-based side until June 30, 2020.

In a statement on Juventus’ official website, the club expressed joy at Buffon’s return, stating, “After a year away from Turin, Gianluigi Buffon has returned to Juventus.” The veteran goalkeeper left Juventus in May 2018, after 17 seasons with the club, and spent the 2018-19 season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

During his time in France, Buffon played 17 Ligue 1 matches, maintaining an impressive save percentage of 73.5%. He also added a French league title and a Super Cup to his long list of accolades. However, the 41-year-old decided to return to Juventus after his contract with PSG expired, aiming for one final chance to win the elusive Champions League trophy.

Buffon, who has made almost 700 appearances for Juventus and won nine Serie A titles (Scudetti), is now set to become Serie A’s all-time record appearance holder. While not confirmed in the club’s statement, there is speculation that Buffon could remain with Juventus in a coaching or directorial role after the 2019-20 season.

Buffon’s return makes him Juventus’ second summer signing, following his former PSG teammate Adrien Rabiot, who also joined as a free agent.
