Popular skit maker Chukwuemeka Amuzie, known as Brain Jotter, has been named the Overall Best Social Media Content Creator at the Social Media Awards (SMA) 2024. Brain Jotter gained fame for his creative skits, including one that revived the 1983 highlife hit “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” by legendary singer Mike Ejeagha, making it go viral.
Other notable winners at the event included comedian Mark Angel, who received the Best Facebook Content Creator award, and former Big Brother Naija star Anita Akide, popularly known as Tacha, who was named Social Media Influencer of the Year. Additionally, Palmpay was recognized for its innovation in financial technology, winning Best Use of Social Media on a Fintech Platform.
The event’s convener, Mr. Emmanuel Nwafor, highlighted the awards’ expanded vision, stating, “We’ve gone beyond celebrating achievements in the digital space to actively engaging with society. This year, we introduced charity initiatives, including hospital visits to support patients and donations to charity homes. It’s our way of making a broader societal impact.”
For 2024, new categories were added to reflect the evolving dynamics of the digital space, ensuring inclusivity across diverse contributors. The co-convener, Mr. Maxwell Nzekwe, noted the introduction of non-votable awards to honor individuals leveraging social media for philanthropy and societal impact. “We’ve recognised influencers, philanthropists, and journalists who use their platforms to promote inspiring stories,” he said.
The SMA 2024 also launched impactful charitable programs, such as offsetting hospital bills, providing scholarships, and paying WAEC fees for underprivileged students. These initiatives align with the awards’ mission to inspire and support communities through social media influence.
This year’s edition featured 37 categories, recognizing talents ranging from individual creators to brands, solidifying SMA as a platform that celebrates excellence and societal contributions in the digital space.
