The Borno State Police Command has apprehended two suspects, Ibrahim Abubako and Ibrahim Mohammed, both aged 18, for allegedly snatching 25 mobile phones from unsuspecting victims. The arrests were made during a stop-and-search operation by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) along Damboa Road in Maiduguri.
Arrest Details and Confession
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the suspects were intercepted in a tricycle during the operation conducted on December 10, 2024. The officers discovered 25 stolen mobile phones of various models in their possession.
Upon interrogation, the suspects admitted to snatching the phones from their rightful owners in several communities along the Borno-Adamawa state borders. The targeted locations included Mubi town, Tashan Alade, Miringa, Kwaya Kusar, and Biu Local Government Area.
Daso stated, “The suspects have confessed to the crime and will be charged to court for prosecution following the conclusion of the investigation.”
Efforts to Reunite Phones With Owners
In addition to preparing the suspects for prosecution, the police command has initiated measures to return the recovered phones to their rightful owners. Authorities have urged individuals who may have lost their phones in the affected areas to report to the police with proof of ownership to reclaim their property.
Public Safety During the Festive Period
ASP Daso emphasized the Borno State Police Command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and properties during the festive season. The command has increased patrols and surveillance to curb criminal activities and enhance public security throughout the Yuletide period.
“The command reaffirms its commitment to ensuring public safety, particularly during the upcoming Yuletide season,” Daso stated.
Advisory to the Public
Daso also issued a public advisory, urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities in their communities. “Members of the public are advised to remain mindful and vigilant of their surroundings and report any suspicious activities within their domain,” he added.
Broader Implications of the Arrest
The arrest of these two suspects highlights the persistent issue of petty crimes like phone snatching in urban and border regions. It also underscores the effectiveness of proactive policing methods such as stop-and-search operations.
While this particular case shows progress in addressing such crimes, it also calls attention to the need for more community involvement in crime prevention. Collaboration between law enforcement agencies and residents can significantly improve the detection and prevention of criminal activities.
As the investigation progresses and the suspects face prosecution, the Borno State Police Command continues to assure residents of their safety and the force’s readiness to address security challenges head-on. Residents are encouraged to support the police by reporting crimes and remaining cautious during the festive season.
This development sends a strong message to criminals operating in the region, reinforcing the police’s resolve to protect the public and bring perpetrators to justice.
