Justice Maryann Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has postponed the arraignment of ex-Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to November 27, 2024. Bello, along with co-defendants Shuabu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, faces a 16-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged criminal breach of trust and conspiracy involving N110.4 billion.
During Thursday’s session, EFCC counsel Jamiu Agoro requested the adjournment, stating that the court’s summons order, issued on October 3, was still within the 30-day period, allowing time to ensure Bello’s appearance. Justice Anenih previously mandated that a public summons be published in a widely read newspaper and displayed at Bello’s last known address and in prominent court locations.
Agoro also sought court approval to post a hearing notice at Bello’s last known address. He said, “We respectfully request an extension for the 1st defendant’s court appearance, considering the 30-day period is ongoing.”
Both Oricha and Hudu, Bello’s co-defendants, were granted administrative bail by the EFCC. Their counsel, Aliyu Saiki (SAN) and ZE Abass, voiced no opposition to the adjournment, affirming an agreement with the EFCC to reschedule for November 27.
Following submissions, Justice Anenih approved the EFCC’s adjournment request and the posting of a hearing notice at Bello’s residence, stating, “The application is granted.”
The case, involving serious financial misconduct allegations, will resume for arraignment on November 27.
