Product designer Justin Mitchell has developed Amber KB1, a conceptual portable clamshell keyboard designed to turn smartphones into functional laptops.

Compatibility and Purpose Amber KB1 is specifically designed for compatibility with iPhone models and the Samsung Galaxy S series. The keyboard allows users to securely dock their smartphones into the device slot and type with ease using Bluetooth connectivity.

“The Amber keyboard, or KB1 as we are calling it, was inspired by a need to write anywhere inspiration strikes,” Mitchell told FRONTPAGE.

Design and Build The Amber KB1 features a robust clamshell design with a top section large enough to accommodate most large-format smartphones. To ensure broad compatibility, the keyboard will ship with faceplates tailored for the most common device sizes.

The keyboard itself boasts mechanical, chunky keys, offering a tactile and responsive typing experience. “The keycaps will feature a low-profile linear mechanical switch for a balance between that fun clacky feel and non-intrusive sound for those writing in shared spaces or cafes,” Mitchell explained.

For construction, the shell will be crafted from soft-touch plastic, while the top surface will be covered in polyurethane synthetic leather embossed with the Amber logo.

Portability and Charging Designed for portability, the Amber KB1 is compact enough to fit in a car’s side pocket or a small bag. The device is rechargeable via a USB port, ensuring convenience for users on the go.

Hinge Mechanism and Stability One of the key challenges in designing the Amber KB1 was perfecting the hinge mechanism to ensure stability during intensive typing. The phone holder integrates a MagSafe-compatible magnet to securely lock smartphones in place.

“The hinge has to be robust enough to support the weight of the phone, while also offering adjustable angles for optimal ergonomics and stability during typing,” Mitchell stated. “We built a gap into the top shell to allow the top half of the clamshell to extend further back than 90 degrees, so the writer is not hunched over while typing. This ensures a comfortable position while maintaining a weighted balance. Laptop hinges served as a major inspiration point here, as they already achieve this quite well.”

Conclusion The Amber KB1 presents an innovative solution for writers, students, and professionals looking for a portable, laptop-like typing experience with their smartphones. With a thoughtful design and focus on ergonomics, it bridges the gap between mobility and productivity, making it a promising addition to the evolving tech landscape.
