A Conceptual Device for Focus and Productivity Design laboratory ÆHD has introduced M E T I, a concept digital timer shaped like an hourglass that locks smartphones, helping users stay focused on tasks. The device features speaker grilles on its upper and lower sections, with a scroll wheel in the center to adjust the timer. Behind the grilles, a digital screen remains hidden, with the upper section displaying the time countdown and the lower section projecting animations reminiscent of sand trickling down and piling up.

Multipurpose Features with Bluetooth Connectivity M E T I’s speaker grilles may also function as Bluetooth speakers, as indicated by the Bluetooth logo on the lower section. This feature allows users to stream music while using the device. The hourglass digital timer connects to smartphones via a dedicated app developed by ÆHD, where users can set timers according to their needs.

For example, users can activate the Game Mode, which lasts 45 minutes. Once the mode is set, the countdown begins on M E T I, and smartphones remain locked until the timer completes.

Scroll Wheel Doubles as a ‘Fidget’ Toy Designed by Andrea Fanelli and Edoardo Gouffran, the masterminds behind ÆHD, M E T I draws inspiration from traditional hourglass designs. The scroll wheel in the middle serves a dual purpose—not only does it allow users to adjust the timer, but it also functions as a ‘fidget’ toy. Recognizing that many people engage in habitual doomscrolling, the designers included this interactive feature to provide a similar tactile experience, minus the distractions of apps and screens.

Potential for Future Production Currently, M E T I remains a concept project, with no confirmed release date. If Fanelli and Gouffran decide to bring it to market, the hourglass digital timer could also serve as a night lamp. The device would include a semi-transparent plug stand that acts as a charging base. A USB port at the bottom enables charging, and once plugged in, the timer displays the current time while emitting a warm, soft glow, making it a functional bedside accessory.
