This is based on data from Worldometer, a reference website that offers real-time statistics and counters for a variety of subjects. It is owned and run by Dadax, a Chinese data corporation that makes money online by selling advertisements.

The term “abortion” most frequently refers to an induced abortion of a human pregnancy, as do the numbers shown here; spontaneous abortions are typically referred to as miscarriages.

According to the website, “The data on abortions displayed on the Worldometer’s counter is based on the most recent statistics on abortions worldwide published by the World Health Organization.”

The World Health Organization states that when an abortion is performed by a qualified professional, in accordance with recognized protocols, and for a pregnancy of a suitable length, it is safe.
According to the WHO, unsafe abortion is a major factor in maternal mortality and morbidities that can be avoided. It may result in issues with women’s physical and mental health as well as financial and social costs for communities and healthcare systems.

The majority of unsafe abortions—97%—occur in developing nations. In Asia, over 50% of unsafe abortions take place, with the majority taking place in south and central Asia. Approximately three out of every four abortions performed in Latin America and Africa are dangerous. According to the WHO, about half of abortions in Africa take place in situations that are not safe.
