A new report, The Mobile Economy Sub-Saharan Africa 2024, reveals that 5G technology is set to contribute $10 billion to Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy by 2030, accounting for six percent of the region’s total mobile technology economic impact.

The report, obtained by FRONTPAGE, highlights the transformative potential of 5G in reshaping industries and spurring economic growth across the region. Much of this impact is anticipated over the next five years as 5G adoption accelerates.

Projected Economic Impact of 5G Technology

According to the report, 5G adoption will peak by the end of the decade, when the technology reaches scale and widespread acceptance. The manufacturing sector is predicted to drive 30 percent of 5G’s economic benefits, leveraging innovations such as smart factories, IoT-enabled products, and smart grids.

Other significant contributors include the information and communication technology (ICT) sector and public administration, accounting for 13 percent and 7 percent of the projected impact, respectively.

“5G will be a catalyst for economic transformation, with manufacturing emerging as a key beneficiary,” the report stated, underscoring the opportunities for businesses to enhance efficiency and innovation through 5G applications.

Current Status of 5G Deployment in Sub-Saharan Africa

Globally, 5G technology is now available in more than 100 countries, with 285 operators across 114 countries launching mobile 5G services by September 2024. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 34 live 5G networks have been established across 21 countries, with fixed wireless access (FWA) emerging as a key application.

FWA provides high-speed connectivity in areas where deploying fibre-optic networks is not cost-effective, making it an essential tool for bridging connectivity gaps in the region. Over half of the existing 5G networks in Sub-Saharan Africa support FWA, benefiting both consumers and enterprises.

Challenges to 5G Adoption

Despite its potential, 5G adoption in Sub-Saharan Africa faces challenges such as limited infrastructure and affordability. However, the growing demand for enhanced connectivity and digital services is driving progress.

The report notes, “Industries across the region are beginning to incorporate 5G-enabled technologies, creating opportunities for innovation and growth.”

Call for Collaboration

As 5G adoption gains traction, the report urges policymakers and industry stakeholders to address barriers to deployment. Collaboration will be essential to ensuring the economic benefits of 5G are maximised. By 2030, the technology is expected to transform the region’s economy, providing substantial benefits to industries and creating new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.
