The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has raised the alarm over a surge in online impersonation, cautioning Nigerians to steer clear of 21 fraudulent Facebook pages falsely claiming affiliation with the agency. This warning, issued in an official public notice signed by the Fund’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, aims to safeguard students and the general public from online scams targeting the rapidly expanding student loan programme.
NELFUND emphasized that it maintains only one verified Facebook page, accessible via this official link:

Any other page or social media account claiming to represent the Fund is fraudulent, the agency warned.
Public Urged to Avoid Scams and Report Suspicious Activity
The Fund has urged Nigerians to refrain from following, engaging with, or sharing any content from the identified fake pages. More importantly, citizens have been strongly advised not to divulge personal information—such as national identity details or bank account numbers—on these unverified platforms. According to NELFUND, doing so could lead to identity theft, scams, or other forms of cybercrime.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency, the Fund stressed that all legitimate updates, including loan application procedures and student support guidelines, will only be posted through its official website and verified social media handles.
In response to the impersonation threat, NELFUND disclosed that it is actively collaborating with security agencies and social media platforms to trace and dismantle the counterfeit pages. Citizens have also been encouraged to join in these efforts by reporting suspicious or misleading platforms.

₦73.1 Billion Disbursed as Loan Programme Records Strong Uptake
As fraudulent activity rises, NELFUND also reported a surge in participation and disbursement under its student loan programme. As of June 28, 2025, the Fund has disbursed a total of ₦73.1 billion in student loans to 366,247 Nigerian students across 206 tertiary institutions.
The disbursed funds include:
-
₦38.26 billion paid directly to cover institutional tuition and fees
-
₦34.85 billion allocated as upkeep allowances to assist with students’ daily living expenses
Data from NELFUND’s real-time Student Loan Disbursement Dashboard reveals a growing interest and active participation in the programme. Since the portal’s launch on May 24, 2024, over 647,269 students have registered, and 611,018 have completed and submitted applications—a remarkable 94% application completion rate.
Even within a single 24-hour reporting window—from June 27 to June 28—the portal saw an additional 1,316 new successful registrants and 1,387 completed applications. In fact, over 105% of newly registered students managed to submit full applications within that same period—an indication of the platform’s user-friendly design and operational efficiency.
NELFUND Reassures the Public
In closing, NELFUND assured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to protecting beneficiaries and ensuring transparency in the management of student loans. While fraudsters continue to exploit the growing popularity of the programme, the agency reiterated that its only official communication platforms are those listed above. Any attempt to access the Fund through other means may expose users to fraud and should be treated with extreme caution.
As student loan disbursements scale up, the Fund called on stakeholders—students, guardians, institutions, and the media—to remain vigilant and help protect the integrity of the programme by reporting fake accounts and verifying all information from official sources.
