National Assembly Halts Legislative Activities to Honour Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari

National Assembly

The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities for one week in honour of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, confirmed the development on Monday through an official statement issued on behalf of the leadership of both legislative chambers.

The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria mourns the passing of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, former President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” the statement read.

As a mark of respect, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives jointly approved the suspension of all legislative proceedings until Tuesday, July 22, 2025. The decision aims to allow lawmakers to participate fully in the burial rites and national mourning of the late former leader.

A Tribute to Buhari’s Leadership and Legacy

Buhari, who served Nigeria both as a military head of state and later as a democratically elected president for two consecutive terms, leaves behind a legacy marked by his unwavering commitment to integrity, anti-corruption, and national cohesion.

Throughout his time in office, Buhari consistently positioned himself as a leader dedicated to the rule of law, transparency, and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He remained a central figure in national politics for over four decades and maintained a polarizing yet prominent presence in public service until his passing.

Ogunlana, in the official communication, extended the Assembly’s heartfelt condolences not only to the federal government and the people of Nigeria but also specifically to the people of Katsina State and the family of the late president.

We extend our condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, the people of Katsina State, and the family of the late president—his wife, children, and relatives,” the statement noted.

Burial Arrangements in Daura

Buhari will be buried in his ancestral hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites. The final arrangements are expected to draw national and international dignitaries, alongside family members, traditional leaders, political allies, and citizens who have admired his leadership over the years.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and abroad. Many have remembered him as a man of austere principles who held firmly to ideals of public accountability, discipline, and national unity.

Global Reactions and National Mourning

World leaders, regional blocs, and international organizations have expressed condolences, reflecting on Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, his diplomatic engagements, and his role in shaping West Africa’s political landscape.

Back home, political stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the general public have joined in the mourning, reflecting on the highs and lows of Buhari’s political journey—from his tenure as military ruler in the 1980s to his democratic resurgence decades later.

Although his administration faced criticism over issues such as insecurity and economic challenges, many acknowledged his lifelong dedication to national service and his repeated efforts to unify Nigeria’s diverse population.

Legislative Suspension: A Symbol of Respect

The decision by the National Assembly to suspend legislative proceedings serves as a solemn gesture of respect and national solidarity. Lawmakers across party lines have welcomed the move, emphasizing the importance of honouring a leader who served the country at two critical junctures in its history.

This suspension not only allows federal lawmakers to participate in memorial activities but also signals the gravity of Buhari’s passing to the entire nation.

As Nigerians reflect on his life and leadership, many are revisiting his signature policies, including his focus on anti-corruption, agricultural reforms, and efforts to reposition Nigeria on the global stage.

A Final Farewell

As preparations continue for his burial in Daura, Nigerians at home and abroad pause to pay tribute to one of the nation’s most influential post-independence leaders. Mosques across the country have offered prayers for his soul, while public institutions have lowered flags in mourning.

May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement from the National Assembly concluded.

Buhari’s journey, from soldier to statesman, remains etched in Nigeria’s history. His death marks the end of an era, but his influence on the nation’s political and moral discourse is expected to endure for generations.
