The highlight of Mikel Obi’s remarkable career, according to Nigeria’s Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Sunday Dare, is the midfielder’s tribute of Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League title victory to the late Rashidi Yekini.
In his statement made on Wednesday, September 28, Hon. Sunday Dare praised the midfielder’s outstanding career, while Mikel Obi announced his retirement from active football on Tuesday, September 27.
“I join you in celebrating your retirement from professional football, Mikel John Obi. We appreciate you proudly wearing our fatherland’s green and white jersey. The message from the Sports Minister started.
You brought joy to homes and made Nigerians proud for over ten years. First of all, your work ethic and commitment were excellent both as a player and as captain.
We will smile since you were a vital member of the historic, all-conquering AFCON team in 2013. Years later, the young child we saw as an Eaglet developed into an indomitable Eagle.
“With your art, you represented Nigeria as a deserving ambassador on the biggest stages outside. You honored our great, the late Rashidi Yekini, with your UEFA Champions League victory on a tense night in Munich.
John, you have our utmost admiration. I congratulate you with millions of Nigerians worldwide because you have left a strong legacy for others to follow. Written by Hon. Sunday Dare.
The midfielder’s professional path has always been greatly admired by the sports minister, who even helped him get appointed as Nigeria’s Youth Ambassador in June 2021.
