A deadly explosion on the Maiduguri-Damboa road in Borno State has resulted in the tragic deaths of eight passengers and left 11 others seriously injured. The incident occurred around noon on Saturday when a bus struck an explosive device while traveling through Komala village in Konduga Local Government Area.
IED Likely Planted by Boko Haram Militants
The bus, registered as Jigawa MMR144, was en route from Damboa to Maiduguri when it stepped on the suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Authorities believe the IED was planted by Boko Haram militants. According to ASP Nahum Daso, spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, the injured victims are currently receiving medical care. He further confirmed that police forces have launched a clearance operation in the area to ensure no further explosions occur.
Local Drivers Confirm Chaos and Delay
Following the explosion, several local drivers passing through the area reported a gridlock as onlookers gathered to express sympathy before security forces evacuated the victims. One motorist, Aminu Ismaila, who passed by the scene later, shared that there was significant delay as security agents conducted their operations.
Another anonymous motorist described the explosion’s aftermath, stating that the damage to the bus was so severe that it was clear an explosion was responsible, not a simple traffic accident.
Ongoing Efforts to Prevent Further Attacks
Local authorities, including the Divisional Police Officers in charge of Damboa and Konduga, are on high alert, collaborating with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) teams to guide motorists and maintain safety. The police have assured that the situation is being closely monitored to prevent further incidents.
