A man from Anambra State narrowly escaped mob justice on Wednesday after being discovered carrying the corpse of his son in a carton at Itam Timber Market in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The incident unfolded when market traders noticed the man, accompanied by two young boys, heading toward a waste receptacle with a carton on his head, raising suspicions among the crowd.

An eyewitness, who spoke anonymously, described the scene, stating, “Curious traders stopped the man, lowered the carton, and were shocked to find the lifeless body of a young boy, naked but carefully wrapped in torn cloth.” This discovery sparked anger among the onlookers, with accusations of ritualistic motives, leading the crowd to confront the man until the police intervened.

In a viral video, the man is seen resisting as people demanded he remove the child’s body from the carton. The confrontation was diffused only when law enforcement arrived.

According to Akwa Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer, Timfon John, preliminary investigations have revealed that the man did not kill his son. John explained, “The man, a father of three, was intercepted with a deceased boy and two living sons. He clarified to the police that, according to his tradition, deceased males are not buried outside their ancestral home. He was attempting to transport his son’s body back to Anambra State for burial.”

The deceased child has been taken to the morgue, and police investigations are ongoing to verify the man’s account.
