Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Resigns from NNPP Amid Deepening Internal Crisis

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing unresolved internal conflicts and the need to prioritise the collective interest of the people of Kano State.

The development was confirmed in a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the statement, Governor Yusuf formally communicated his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, with effect from Friday, January 23, 2026.

In the letter, the governor expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity and support it provided throughout his political journey since joining the NNPP in 2022.

Governor Yusuf noted that his decision followed a period of deep reflection and was largely influenced by persistent leadership disputes and legal battles that have continued to destabilise the party at both state and national levels.

He explained that the prolonged internal crises had weakened unity within the party, created divisions among members, and generated widespread uncertainty across its structure.

According to the governor, the growing lack of cohesion within the NNPP has reached a point where it could no longer effectively serve the broader public interest of Kano residents.

He stressed that his resignation was taken in good faith and without bitterness, reaffirming his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued development of Kano State.

The governor also disclosed that his exit from the party was not in isolation, as it was accompanied by the resignation of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

The resignation letter was formally acknowledged by the Secretary of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised Governor Yusuf for his performance in office and his contributions to infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education, and economic empowerment.
