ABUJA – In a landmark move for medical accountability in Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has slapped interim suspension orders on three high-profile doctors following the tragic death of Master Nkanu Adichie-Esege, the 21-month-old son of world-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The decision comes after the MDCN Investigative Panel established a prima facie case of medical negligence and professional misconduct. The investigation was triggered by a formal complaint lodged on January 16, 2026, centering on the treatment provided at two elite Lagos facilities: Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital and Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.
Top Executives Under Fire
Following a grueling two-day session in Abuja (February 17–18), the Panel determined that the evidence warranted the immediate suspension of the following practitioners:
-
Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi: Medical Director of Euracare.
-
Dr. Titus Ogundare: Anaesthesiologist at Euracare.
-
Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh: Chief Medical Director of Atlantis Paediatric Hospital.
The Council also identified professional misconduct involving 10 other practitioners from Atlantis Paediatric Hospital, signaling a systemic failure in the care provided to the toddler.
The Road to the Tribunal
While the suspensions are an immediate regulatory action to protect the public, the MDCN emphasized that these findings are preliminary. The cases have been officially referred to the Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal, which holds the power of a High Court.
“These cases have been referred… for formal hearing and determination in accordance with the Council’s statutory mandate,” the MDCN stated. “The affected practitioners are entitled to a full hearing where evidence will be examined and a final decision rendered.”
What This Means for Medical Accountability
The death of Nkanu Adichie-Esege has reignited a national conversation regarding the standards of private healthcare in Nigeria. By taking decisive action against Medical Directors and Chief Executives, the MDCN is sending a clear message: administrative oversight is just as scrutinized as clinical practice.
