INEC Registers 3.4 Million New Voters Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has recorded over 3.4 million new voters in the ongoing second phase of its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide, signalling growing political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In its week 13 update released in Abuja, the commission said a total of 3,441,121 registrations had been completed as of April 3, 2026, through a combination of online and in-person processes.

Online registration leads

According to INEC, 2,068,384 Nigerians completed their registration via its online pre-registration platform, while 1,372,737 others registered physically at designated centres across the country.

The figures highlight a rising adoption of digital channels in the voter registration process, alongside sustained turnout at physical registration points.

Jigawa tops list

A breakdown of registrations by state shows that Jigawa State recorded the highest number of new voters, with 201,047 registrants—accounting for 5.84 per cent of the total.

Momentum builds ahead of 2027

The CVR exercise is a critical component of Nigeria’s electoral process, allowing eligible citizens to register for the first time or update their details ahead of elections.

With millions already captured, the latest figures suggest increasing public engagement as preparations gradually intensify for the 2027 polls.

INEC is expected to continue the exercise nationwide, with further updates likely to provide deeper insights into demographic trends and regional participation levels.
