How I changed my music preferences from religious to secular – Rema

Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage name Rema, is a rapidly emerging Nigerian artist who talked about his switch from gospel to secular music on Sunday.

Rema, who used to be the leader of a gospel rap group at her church, mentioned that he started singing in bars and lounges to support himself, which is when things started to change.

The Mavin Records signee revealed this on the Rubbin’ Minds show, which our correspondent watched on Channels TV.

When he transitioned to secular music, the artist, who was born in Benin, mentioned that he had not yet moved to Lagos.

“I was still in Benin when that switch happened,” he stated. Many people believed that I started drifting once I signed.
Not at all. In actuality, life in Benin was difficult. Since I’m carrying out God’s mission, I’m not the type of guy who approaches churchgoers to beg for money.

“I began attending competitions, clubs, lounges, and political rallies as soon as I arrived in Benin. My goal was to take the stage and wield a microphone in order to at least receive some money so that I could return home and provide for my family during our difficult times.

“I had to support my family after losing my sibling and father. I thought it was when I started to become disengaged, little by little, until I just left.
He claimed that both he and his mother found the changeover strange, but he was unable to persuade his mother of the wisdom of his decision.

It was strange for me, and my mother in particular because she was well-known in the church. I didn’t go into great detail. Rema remarked, “I just told her to trust me.”
