How Burna Boy Got His Stage Name

Grammy-winning Nigerian artist, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has disclosed how he came up with his widely recognized stage name.

In a recent interview, the Afrofusion star explained that the name “Burna Boy” was inspired by his childhood love for comic books and superhero characters. According to him, he spent a lot of time as a child drawing comic figures and eventually wanted to create a superhero of his own.

“I used to draw a lot of comic book characters like Spider-Man and Superman. I wanted to become a superhero myself, so I decided to create my own character,” Burna Boy explained. “That’s how the name ‘Burna Boy’ came to life.”

He added that the name has remained with him since his teenage years and eventually became his identity as he pursued a career in music.

Burna Boy, known for global hits such as Last Last, Ye, and City Boys, has become one of Africa’s most prominent music exports.

He is also the first Nigerian artist to headline a stadium show in the United Kingdom and one of the few to win a Grammy Award.
