Women of reproductive age with heart disorders have been strongly advised to consult a medical professional before becoming pregnant to minimize the risk of serious complications. Dr. Tosin Majekodunmi, Consultant Cardiologist and Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos, issued this caution during a recent open forum in Lagos. He emphasized that while many women with heart conditions can experience successful pregnancies, careful planning and expert management are essential.
Majekodunmi explained that pregnancy significantly increases the stress on the heart. “During pregnancy, the cardiac output, or the load and stress on the heart, doubles. For women with heart conditions, this additional strain can lead to serious complications, including heart failure or cardiovascular collapse during labor,” he said.
He warned that women with congenital heart diseases face heightened risks for both themselves and their babies, with potential outcomes ranging from disability to death. Women with a history of chronic hypertension or valve issues, or those who have experienced early miscarriages, may be particularly vulnerable to heart problems and should receive medical evaluation before pregnancy.
Citing research from Canada, Majekodunmi noted that a significant proportion of maternal deaths are linked to heart-related issues, underscoring the need for early intervention and medical oversight. He further highlighted that certain pregnancy complications can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease later in life.
Majekodunmi also addressed the issue of healthcare costs, acknowledging that not all treatments are accessible to everyone due to financial constraints, further complicating the management of heart conditions during pregnancy.
Women with heart disorders should prioritize medical advice to ensure their health and that of their babies throughout pregnancy.
