Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State has taken a proactive step to safeguard the health and well-being of his constituents by announcing the suspension of the 2021 Calabar Carnival. This decision was made in conjunction with stakeholders who voted to suspend the carnival, citing concerns over the spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variant and prevailing security issues.
The annual Calabar Carnival, known for its vibrant cultural displays and tourist attractions, draws large crowds from across Nigeria and beyond. However, with the emergence of the Omicron variant, Ayade recognized the potential risks associated with hosting such a large gathering.
At a meeting held at the State Executive Council Chamber, attended by carnival band leaders, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Eteng Jones Williams, members of the State Executive Council, and local government chairmen from the 18 council areas of the state, Ayade emphasized his commitment to prioritizing the safety and lives of citizens.
“As a governor and leader, I will not compromise the lives and safety of our citizens for the fleeting excitement of the carnival,” Ayade stated. This decision demonstrates his administration’s proactive approach to managing public health concerns and ensuring the well-being of Cross River State residents.
The suspension of the carnival is part of broader efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Ayade’s administration has implemented various measures to combat the pandemic, including public awareness campaigns, vaccination drives, and enhanced healthcare infrastructure.
In addition to his COVID-19 response efforts, Ayade has been recognized for his achievements in other areas, including:
- The commercial production of the Ogoja Rice Mill, a significant step towards boosting food security and economic growth.
- The presentation of the N276 billion budget, aimed at driving development and infrastructure projects.
- The establishment of the New Teachers Institute, designed to enhance education quality.
- The development of the airport with the longest runway, facilitating improved air travel and connectivity.
Ayade’s leadership has been lauded by various stakeholders, including Cross River leaders and monarchs, who appreciate his commitment to the state’s progress and development.
