Governor Monday Okpebholo has dismissed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Edo State, Samson Osagie, in a move that has raised fresh questions about internal dynamics within the state’s executive cabinet.
The termination of Osagie’s appointment was confirmed on Monday, though the state government has yet to release an official statement detailing the reasons behind the decision.
The development comes months after Osagie was reinstated to the role following an earlier suspension over alleged financial irregularities.
Background of Tensions
Osagie was originally suspended in February 2025, alongside the Chairman of the Edo State Local Government Service Commission, Damian Lawani, following what the government then described as “grave official and financial infractions.” An investigative panel was subsequently set up to probe the matter.
In March, Governor Okpebholo reinstated Osagie after the panel reportedly cleared him of any wrongdoing.
At the time, the Attorney-General returned to office affirming his loyalty to the administration and expressing readiness to contribute to the state’s legal and governance framework.
His sudden removal this week, however, has sparked speculation of renewed tensions within the Okpebholo-led administration, with political observers suggesting that the governor may be restructuring his cabinet ahead of key political timelines.
No Official Reason Yet
As of press time, there has been no official explanation from the Governor’s Office regarding the cause of Osagie’s removal.
The development has nonetheless stirred public curiosity, particularly in legal and political circles across Edo State.

Efforts to reach Osagie for comment were unsuccessful. It remains unclear whether he was notified in advance or whether a successor has been appointed.
Implications
The Attorney-General plays a critical role in shaping legal policy and overseeing judicial affairs in the state. Osagie’s removal could have implications for ongoing legal reforms and state-level prosecutions. It may also signal broader shifts within the state government’s leadership structure.
Analysts suggest the move may be part of a larger recalibration of the governor’s inner circle, as political alignments continue to evolve within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State.
Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
