Former President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a strong rebuke to those who treat politics as a space for recklessness and unruly conduct, warning that such behaviour threatens Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Jonathan made the remarks on Thursday during a special dinner held to mark the 10th anniversary of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, an event that also coincided with his 68th birthday celebration.

Speaking to an audience of diplomats, statesmen, political leaders and business executives, the former president lamented that Nigeria’s democratic environment is increasingly strained by irresponsible political actions and inflammatory rhetoric.

“Politics is not for rascals. It is for people who want to build, not destroy,” Jonathan said, stressing that leadership must always be tied to responsibility, restraint and nation-building. He cautioned that the growing culture of hostility and political aggression across Africa is undermining the continent’s democratic strength.

Jonathan also reflected on the origins and impact of his foundation, explaining that its mission over the past decade has centred on peacebuilding, governance reforms, diplomatic engagement and strengthening democratic institutions.

Turning his attention to Nigeria’s security challenges, the former president expressed deep concern over the wave of violent attacks and kidnappings in the country. He urged leaders at all levels to demonstrate genuine commitment to protecting citizens and defending the nation’s democratic order from forces threatening its stability.

The event, described as a gathering of prominent African figures, provided an opportunity for reflection on the country’s political future and the importance of cultivating a culture of civility in governance.
