Fuel Crisis Looms as Dangote Refinery Halts Naira Petrol Sales

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has suspended the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Naira, effective Sunday, September 28, 2025.

In a notice issued to marketers and signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, the company explained that the decision was due to exceeding its crude-for-naira allocations.

The statement read: “Dangote has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.”

The company advised marketers and individuals with existing transactions in Naira to request refunds from the finance department.

The suspension is expected to impact the downstream sector, with stakeholders warning of possible fuel price increases as marketers may now be required to buy products in foreign currency.

Analysts also caution that the move could worsen pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, which has already been strained by rising dollar demand.

The development comes amid ongoing labour disputes at the refinery, including the recent termination of hundreds of Nigerian employees following their unionisation under PENGASSAN.
