NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Dangerous Fake Noristerat Contraceptive in Circulation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a strong warning to Nigerians following the discovery of counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg in the country.
The agency confirmed that the fake contraceptive has already been circulating in Kano, Bauchi, and Niger States, with significant quantities traced to the Coordinated Wholesale Centre in Kano.

In a statement released on Monday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, NAFDAC alerted the public to the serious health risks associated with the product.
The agency disclosed that the counterfeit injection was mislabeled and repackaged from Chlorpheniramine and Dexamethasone—two drugs unrelated to contraception.

Why This Is Dangerous

Noristerat 200mg is a genuine contraceptive injection used for short-term pregnancy prevention, offering eight weeks of protection per dose.
The fake product, however, offers no contraceptive benefits, placing women at risk of unintended pregnancies and potential hormonal complications from misused drugs.

“This poses a serious health risk as unsuspecting women may be using a product that offers no contraceptive protection,” the agency wrote.

Counterfeiter Tracked and Arrested

NAFDAC confirmed that its surveillance teams have successfully tracked and arrested the individual responsible for the fake drug.
“We have successfully tracked and arrested the counterfeiter behind this dangerous act,” the agency stated.
NAFDAC assured Nigerians that ongoing efforts are in place to remove all fake products from circulation.

How to Identify the Fake Noristerat

The counterfeit Noristerat bears the following details:

  • Registration Number: 04-5715

  • Manufacturing Date: September 2022

  • Expiry Date: September 2027

  • Lot Number: KT02TTK

The product appears legitimate at first glance but contains substances that are not contraceptives.
NAFDAC emphasized that healthcare workers and pharmacists should be extra vigilant when dispensing the drug.

Public Urged to Report Suspicious Products

NAFDAC called on healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the public to immediately report any suspected counterfeit Noristerat Injection.
“Your cooperation is vital in protecting public health,” the agency stated.

To make a report or seek more information, individuals can visit NAFDAC’s official website or contact the nearest NAFDAC office.

Strengthening Surveillance and Protecting Public Health

NAFDAC reassured the public of its unwavering commitment to protecting Nigerians from unsafe medical products.
The agency promised to tighten surveillance efforts, especially in areas where counterfeit drugs have been found.

This incident highlights the ongoing danger of fake pharmaceuticals in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
It also underscores the need for consumers to always verify products before use and consult only licensed healthcare professionals for medications and injections.

Conclusion: Stay Alert, Save Lives

The circulation of counterfeit Noristerat is a wake-up call for both the public and health institutions.
NAFDAC’s swift response and arrest of the counterfeiter show that regulatory bodies are on high alert.
However, public vigilance remains crucial.

Nigerians must double-check medications, report suspicious products, and stay informed to prevent harm.
Because when it comes to healthcare, one fake dose can lead to a lifetime of consequences.
