The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an extensive security operation in Abuja, deploying 2,202 officers to maintain safety and order throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The operation, approved by the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, is part of the command’s 2025 festive season security strategy. The initiative focuses on boosting police presence at religious centres, entertainment venues and other locations expected to record heavy human traffic during the holidays.

In a statement released on Thursday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, disclosed that officers have been positioned at churches, mosques, event centres, motor parks, major highways and other strategic public areas across the territory. The deployment, she said, is designed to ensure residents and visitors enjoy a peaceful and incident-free festive period.

Adeh noted that as the country moves toward 2026, the police remain committed to sustaining peace, protecting lives and property, and preventing a breakdown of law and order within the FCT. According to her, the security arrangement combines visible policing with intelligence-driven patrols to deter criminal activity.

She added that locations identified as crime-prone, including abandoned buildings, shanties and other known black spots, are under strict surveillance. In some cases, security operatives are carrying out targeted raids to deny criminals any opportunity to exploit such areas.

The police spokesperson further explained that tactical units, rapid response teams and regular patrol officers have been mobilised to reinforce security across the capital, supported by intensified vehicular and foot patrols.

In addition, the command is working closely with other security agencies to ensure a coordinated approach to security throughout the festive season. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units have also been deployed to conduct routine checks at worship centres and venues hosting large gatherings, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police.

The Commissioner of Police has called on residents to remain alert, comply with the law and promptly report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest police station or through the FCT Police Command’s emergency lines.

Security agencies often heighten operations during festive periods due to increased travel, social activities and public gatherings, which can create vulnerabilities for criminal elements.
