The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken decisive action against Ikeja Electric, sealing its facilities over repeated breaches of consumer rights and failure to comply with regulatory directives.
Bola Adeyinka, FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, explained that the measure aligns with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.
“Sealing this facility is a proportionate enforcement measure, taken only after repeated engagement and multiple opportunities for voluntary compliance,” Adeyinka said in a statement on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
The Commission clarified that the seal will remain until Ikeja Electric fully implements directives issued by both the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the FCCPC, and provides written proof of compliance.
The dispute centers on a NERC order instructing Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 separate non-Maximum Demand accounts. The directive required the utility to recognize 19 residential units and one service point belonging to a customer as independent units, complete with necessary metering and connections.
Despite fulfilling all payment obligations, the complainant has been without electricity for over two and a half years. “The lack of electricity has prevented the complainant from using the nineteen residential units, even though all charges were duly paid,” the FCCPC noted.
According to the Commission, Ikeja Electric was repeatedly engaged on the matter. In April 2025, the FCCPC issued a detailed directive outlining the compliance steps and deadlines. When the company failed to act, a Compliance Notice was issued on October 2, 2025, mandating adherence within seven business days—yet no action was taken.

As of this report, Ikeja Electric has not issued any comment on the sealing of its facilities.
The FCCPC’s intervention underscores the government’s commitment to protecting consumer rights and enforcing regulatory compliance within Nigeria’s electricity sector.
