Rena Wakama has officially joined the Chicago Sky as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025 WNBA season. This move marks another major milestone in her fast-rising career.
The 2021 WNBA champions announced her appointment on Tuesday through their official website. She joins the team’s coaching staff under head coach Tyler Marsh, working alongside Courtney Paris and Tanisha Wright.
Chicago Sky backs Wakama’s leadership strength
Coach Marsh praised Wakama’s proven record and winning mentality. According to him, she brings energy and excellence to the Sky’s program.
“We’ve seen her success with Nigeria at the Olympics,” Marsh said. “Her coaching background and player development skills are exceptional.”
He described her as a “young leader” with the mindset and vision to make a strong impact.
Wakama made history with Nigeria’s national team
Wakama became head coach of D’Tigress in June 2023. She immediately led Nigeria to their fourth straight AfroBasket title in Rwanda.
She didn’t stop there. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Wakama guided Nigeria to historic wins against Australia and Canada.
As a result of those victories, D’Tigress reached the Olympic quarterfinals—a first for any African basketball team.
Although the team lost to the United States in the quarters, Wakama’s impact was undeniable. FIBA named her Best Coach of the Tournament.
She embraces her new WNBA journey
Following the announcement, Wakama expressed deep gratitude to the Chicago Sky leadership.
“I’m honored and thankful to Jeff and Tyler for this opportunity,” she said. “I’m proud to join the Sky family.”
She also praised Coach Marsh’s basketball knowledge. “Tyler has one of the best minds in the industry,” Wakama said.
“I’m excited to help bring his vision to life and grow the team’s competitive spirit,” she added.
Wakama promised to work hard with her fellow coaches to shape a fun, energetic, and strategic team. “Let’s get to work!” she concluded.
Chicago Sky begins 2025 season with big expectations
The team will open the 2025 WNBA season on Saturday, May 17, against the Indiana Fever at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Chicago Sky, who won the WNBA title in 2021, continues rebuilding for another championship run. Wakama’s arrival strengthens their coaching team.
Her global experience and tactical insight will benefit the franchise on and off the court.
Africa celebrates another global milestone
Wakama’s WNBA role reflects Africa’s growing influence in global basketball. Her success inspires coaches and players across the continent.
By earning a key role in one of the WNBA’s top teams, she sets a powerful example for women in sports leadership.
Her story proves that African excellence belongs on the world stage—and that hard work, vision, and passion pay off.
