DJ Prince, whose real name is Chibuzor Prince Kalu, is now well-known because of his talent, which has helped him stand out from other musicians. Born in Abia State, the current AFRIMMA Best African DJ-USA has since established himself as one of the top African DJs in the Diaspora.
His career has reached previously unimaginable heights thanks to his unwavering dedication to self-improvement and natural love for the work.
About 12 years ago, the graduate of Northeastern University’s bachelor’s and master’s programs immigrated to the US. His early musical influences included Flavour N’abania and Eastern Nigerian highlife music. Early pop musicians like 2face Idibia and D’banj also had a big impact on him, before Davido eventually did. His path to becoming a deejay is really interesting, since 2016 laid the groundwork for his future profession.
“My friend needed a place to put his DJ gear in the fall of 2016, and I offered him space in exchange for his setting up a speaker and mixer in my room so I could listen to my MP3 every day. Following weeks of studying how to maneuver among crates and listening to an endless amount of music, and button functionalities on YouTube,” he said.
Despite setting up his gear, DJ Prince’s big break came when he covered for an absent DJ at a wedding. He described the event as his “baptism” into the disc jockeying industry.
Making a name for myself has been difficult; among other things, I’ve had to prove myself time and time again and lack a team to manage my reservations. The travel and the opportunity to meet both new and old faces are my favorite aspects of being a jockey.
Being a DJ has given him a global responsibility to inspire people and make a difference in the world. He added, “It’s an opportunity to use music to tell a story and the power to use music to sway emotions.”
Developing relationships with influential people in the music business, researching accomplished professionals, and drawing inspiration from his past setbacks to further his career have all contributed to his ascent to the top. He had dreams, woke up, and worked relentlessly to fulfill them.
Since his accidental first performance, DJ Prince has performed at many weddings and events and toured with singers such as Davido, Yemi Alade, Joeboy, Mayorkun, Wande Coal, Flavor, Rema, Omah Lay, and Fireboy. His most memorable touring experience was when he supported Burna Boy at the legendary Madison Square Garden sell-out performance.
DJ Prince remarked of receiving the AFRIMMA 2022 Best African DJ USA award: “Amazing Experience!
I paused to consider how the entire year had led me to that point. I immediately lost my cool and expressed my gratitude to God and the people who helped me get there, including my friends, family, and Duke Osita of Duke Concept.
