Amnesty International has strongly criticized the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for banning Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem’s protest song, Tell Your Papa. The human rights organization called the ban a clear violation of freedom of expression and access to information. In a statement issued on Thursday, Amnesty condemned the move as “unlawful, arbitrary, and deeply worrying,” warning that it reflects a growing trend of government censorship under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The organization argued that the ban sets a dangerous precedent that could stifle free speech and creativity in Nigeria. Amnesty described the decision as a direct attack on the rights of Nigerians to express themselves through art and media.
NBC’s Justification for the Ban Draws Criticism
NBC imposed the ban, classifying Tell Your Papa as “Not To Be Broadcast” due to its politically charged content. The song critiques the government and highlights the socio-economic challenges faced by many Nigerians. However, Amnesty International dismissed the NBC’s reasoning, labeling it an abuse of power. The organization asserted that banning a song simply for criticizing the government is not only an infringement on freedom of expression but also undermines the public’s right to access diverse opinions.
Amnesty pointed out that this kind of censorship is unacceptable, noting that it disproportionately silences critical voices and prevents citizens from engaging in democratic discourse. “The NBC’s action is an abuse of power,” Amnesty stated. “It reflects an intolerance of dissenting views, which goes against the principles of freedom of expression and media freedom.”
Call for Immediate Reversal of the Ban
Amnesty International called on President Tinubu to immediately intervene and reverse the ban. The organization emphasized that the government must act quickly to uphold the fundamental rights of Nigerians, including their right to free speech. Amnesty argued that the continued suppression of artistic expression would only deepen public distrust and hinder the development of a democratic society.
“The government must withdraw this unjustified ban,” Amnesty urged. “It violates multiple human rights and harms the creative industries in Nigeria.”
The Impact of Censorship on Media and Artistic Freedom
Amnesty raised concerns about the broader implications of the ban on Nigeria’s media landscape. The organization warned that radio and television stations may now feel pressure to censor their own content for fear of facing similar sanctions. This could severely restrict the ability of artists, journalists, and media outlets to criticize the government and share essential information with the public.
“The arbitrary decision by the NBC sets a dangerous precedent,” Amnesty stated. “This clampdown on creative expression could lead to a chilling effect where artists and media outlets censor themselves in fear of retribution.”
Amnesty also stressed that the government’s actions send a negative message to other countries, suggesting that Nigeria is becoming increasingly intolerant of criticism.
Violation of International Human Rights Obligations
Amnesty International reminded the Nigerian government that the country is bound by international agreements that protect the rights to free expression and artistic freedom. These agreements include the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, both of which guarantee freedom of speech and the right to access diverse information.
By banning a song critical of the government, Amnesty argued, Nigeria is violating its commitments under these international treaties. “The NBC’s use of the Broadcasting Code to justify this ban reflects a growing intolerance of dissenting voices,” the group stated.
Call for Regulatory Reform at NBC
The human rights group also called for urgent reforms to the Nigerian Broadcasting Code, which it says has been used to stifle criticism and limit press freedom for years. Amnesty argued that this latest ban highlights the need to revise the code to prevent the abuse of regulatory powers.
“The Nigerian Broadcasting Code has long been used as a tool to suppress dissent and control the media,” Amnesty said. “This ban underscores the urgent need for reform to protect freedom of expression and allow for the free flow of ideas.”
A Dangerous Precedent for Government Censorship
Amnesty concluded its statement with a stark warning that the ban could set a dangerous precedent for future censorship in Nigeria. The organization stated that if the government does not act to reverse the decision, it could embolden authorities to take similar actions against other artists and media outlets.
“It is not too late for President Tinubu to withdraw the ban,” Amnesty urged. “If this action is allowed to stand, it will promote further censorship and create an atmosphere of fear and repression in the country.”
The group warned that continued censorship could limit Nigerians’ ability to engage in open dialogue and express dissent, undermining the democratic fabric of the country.
Government Has Yet to Respond
As of the time of publication, neither NBC nor President Tinubu has commented on Amnesty International’s statement. The silence from the government has raised further concerns about the future of free expression in Nigeria. Amnesty International has urged the Nigerian government to address the issue promptly to avoid further erosion of democratic rights.
If the ban is not reversed, Amnesty warned, it could fuel widespread concern over government-backed censorship and restrict the ability of artists and journalists to challenge injustice and advocate for change.
