Former Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha, has officially pitched his tent with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), ending his long-standing association with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ihedioha formalised his membership on Monday, January 12, 2026, registering at Mbutu Ward in Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. He was issued the ADC membership card numbered 001, symbolising his entry into the party at the grassroots level.
The registration exercise was carried out by the Ward Secretary, Prince Obinna Opara, while the Ward Chairman, Chief Alex Ahamuefula, officially handed over the membership card to the former governor.
Addressing party members shortly after the exercise, Ihedioha explained that his decision to join the ADC was a carefully considered one, driven by the party’s emphasis on accountability, strong values, and people-centred governance.
He noted that both Imo State and Nigeria at large need leadership that is attentive to citizens’ concerns and committed to serving the public interest.
“Our people yearn for leadership that truly listens and serves, placing the common good above personal ambition. I believe the ADC offers a credible and principled platform to advance these ideals,” Ihedioha stated.
He also described his decision to register at the ward level as a reflection of his belief in grassroots politics, stressing the importance of inclusive participation in building a strong democratic culture.
The event attracted several party leaders, stakeholders and community representatives, including Evangelist Dr Obi Nwaigwe, Mayor of Mbutu, and Hon Jonathan Egbule, Chairman of Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area.
Top national officials of the ADC in attendance included the party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Sir Bon Unachukwu, Deputy Diaspora Coordinator, Maigari Bello Kasimu; and Uko Nkole, Coordinator of the Nigerian Former Legislators Forum.
Speaking at the event, Unachukwu described Ihedioha’s defection as a significant milestone for the ADC, particularly in the South-East, noting that his experience and political weight would enhance the party’s national standing.
“The ADC is delighted to receive a former governor and seasoned public servant whose presence will greatly strengthen our appeal and capacity,” he said.
