Ekiti Govt Sacks Surgeon Over Alleged Kidney Removal at EKSUTH

The Ekiti State Government has terminated the appointment of a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) after an investigative panel found serious lapses surrounding the alleged removal of a patient’s kidney during surgery.

According to reports, the decision followed the submission of findings by a seven-member Panel of Enquiry set up roughly two weeks ago. The panel, led by Professor Francis Faduyile, was inaugurated after a patient, identified as Joshua Afolayan, raised concerns over a surgical procedure he underwent at the teaching hospital.

Speaking on the panel’s report, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Oyebanji Filani, confirmed in a statement released on Friday that the surgeon directly in charge of the operation has been dismissed with immediate effect.

Filani further disclosed that other members of the surgical team who were present in the operating theatre at the time of the procedure have been placed on a one-month suspension, pending further administrative action.

In a move aimed at addressing the impact on the affected patient, the state government announced that it would fully sponsor Afolayan’s kidney transplant, including his post-surgery treatment and related medical care for a period of two years.

The commissioner added that the government has accepted the panel’s recommendations and will embark on a major overhaul of relevant departments within EKSUTH. He explained that the reorganisation is intended to improve clinical oversight, strengthen accountability, and ensure better patient safety standards across the hospital.
