The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has debunked rumors circulating on social media that corps members will now receive N31,800 as their monthly stipend following the recent signing of the new minimum wage into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Eddy Megwa, a Deputy Director at the NYSC headquarters in Abuja, clarified on Wednesday that the federal government has not yet informed the Scheme of any changes to the current stipend of N19,800. He emphasized that while the NYSC itself does not pay corps members, the federal government will notify the Scheme when an increase is to be implemented.
“The NYSC does not directly pay stipends to corps members; it is the federal government that does so,” Megwa said. “Until the new N30,000 minimum wage is implemented, there is no official figure for corps members’ stipends.”
He urged corps members and the public to disregard any figures circulating on social media, adding that any official updates will be communicated through proper NYSC channels when the federal government is ready to implement the new wage.
